1991 Meeting

Association of Women Soil Scientists
First Annual Meeting
Denver, CO
Tuesday, October 29, 1991 at 7 p.m.

FIRST AWSS MEETING!

It was a cold and snowy night when the Association of Women Soil Scientists met in Denver on October 29. I finally met Barb Leuelling, AWSS founder, earlier in the week. We were so excited anticipating this first ever meeting and looking forward to getting to know other members in person.

The American Society of Agronomy scheduled two other soils meetings for our night so we wondered how many people we would attract. I left copies of a membership/meeting flyer at convention headquarters to help attract people. Our efforts were very successful--more people attended the meeting than expected.

This special newsletter issue focuses on the meeting, which was lively, full of discussion, and energizing. It was truly a special evening!

Award Presentation (Margie Faber)
Barb Leuelling, founder ofAWSS, was presented a plaque that said:

"It's important to know that words don't move mountains.
Work, exacting work moves mountains."
Danilo Dolci

The AWSS recognizes Barb Leuelling whose vision, commitment, and leadership have moved mounatins.

(Thanks to Peg Harris, Durham, NH for choosing the words to honor Barb and for gettlng the plaque to Denver even though she could not attend the meeting.)

Organizational Structure (Margie Faber)

  • Membership on annual basis, includes three newsletters and Member Directory
  • There is a great need for volunteers to help out AWSS as Editors and Co-Editors. Margie is the Secretary-Treasurer but has been acting as Editor for the past year.
  • Printing of the newsletter has been a problem.

ASA/SSSA Affiliation (Dr. Fred Miller, President SSSA)

  • welcomed us on behalf of the Tri-Societles
  • cautioned against isolating ourselves in a "cocoon"
  • become actively involved in professional societies

High Level Career Opportunotoes (Ann Carey)

  • Job openings in SCS NHQ for Associate Deputy Chief for Programs, pay is $87,000/year
  • There will be many Senior Executive openings in SCS in tht next few years

Mentoring (Kathleen Mulholland)
See article. [This article is not yet posted on the web.]

Discussion

  • How can ASA help us (possibly with newsletter typesetting and mailing)
  • Women in Natural Resources and other groups were mentioned. Membership is $18, $13 for students. They publish a quarterly journal (over 50 pages).
  • Time to form Comittees to help AWSS grow and flourish such as to help with newsletter, check out funding sources, perhaps a scholarship committee, work with other societies and groups.
  • Newsletter: again, we need volunteers become actively involved with the newsletters. Upcoming events should be mentioned in each issue.
  • Future meetings. We decided to definitely meet at the ASA Meeting next tall in Minneapolis. Perhaps there can be other meetings--when other professional societies get together or on a statewide or regional level.
  • AWSS needs your help. To offer assistance, fill out the form accompanying the newsletter and return to Margie.
    THANK YOU!
