MINNEAPOLIS MEETING
The second AWSS meeting ever was held in Minneapolis,
MN on November 3, 1992. More than thirty members and potential
members attended, despite the snow and election night.
Mary West and Laurie Brown did a great job organizing
the meeting and provided Minnesota souvenirs for everyone.
THANKS!
Barb Leuelling talked about why she founded AWSS and
the goals of the organization. She stressed the importance
of networking, supporting, and helping one another.

Committee reports followed. Pamm Kasper, the Meetings
Committee Chair, spoke about setting up this meeting.
Also there are other places that AWSS members could get
together. There was an informal meeting at the Soil and
Water Conservation society Annual Meeting in Baltimore
this summer arranged by Jeri Berc.
Marsha Sheppard reported on the activities of the Mentoring
Committee. In brief, their ideas were:
provide a definition of mentoring for AWSS
provide suggestions as to how it could be accomplished
provide a list of available, high-calibre mentors
provide information on the effectiveness of different
mentor/mentee relationships
provide educational/marketing information on our profession
collaborate with other agencies to keep the spirit of
soil science alive and well
If you wish to be a mentor, or need a mentee PLEASE CONTACT
US! -- Marsha Sheppard or Lenore Matula.
Mary West reported on the Executive Committee meeting.
We need more nominations for officers and dues will increase.
The Committee decided that dues will be $10/year starting
on January 1, 1993. (NOTE: this was later changed to $8/year
after further review of the finances.) Mary spoke briefly
about the results of the survey on discrimination/harassment.
62 of the members responded. Discrimination and harassment
still occur. There were many members who volunteered to
help with a support network for women dealing with these
issues. AWSS also is planning a networking booklet, to
help support members with other concerns in addition to
discrimination and discrimination. You'll be hearing more
about this in the future. For moore information on the
survey results contact Mary West.
Myra Peak spoke for the Current Issues Committee. She
reiterated the summary of the groups activities from the
last AWSS newsletter.
Margie tallted about the Newsletter Committee, the Directory
Committee, and the Membership Committee. All three committees
are actively working on their projects. Barb has been
handling the T-shirts for quite a few years and is lookking
for someone to take over the ordering and distribution.
Please consider offering to help with this--we have a
good T-shirt factory makng them for a good price; we just
need someone willing to fill the orders.
The rest of the meeting was spent discussing the future
of AWSS. The Soil Science Practice Act and mentoring were
also mentioned.
Again, many thanks to both Mary West, Laurie Brown, and
the ASA for helping set up this very productive (and fun)
meeting.
