ASSOCIATION OF WOMEN
SOIL SCIENTISTS
Meeting Notes
November 9, 1993
Cincinnati, Ohio
The meeting started at approximately
7:10 p.m. with Kathy Newkirk introducing herself.
Discussion on sexual harassment
was brought up with responses by many of those present.
The policy that AWSS can't legally take a role in pursuing
these cases because we do not have the trained counselors
and could be held liable. We do not condone such behavior
and have come out against any type of harassment but legally
we are unable to fight any of these battles for individuals.
We are there to listen and possibly direct such inquiries
as what steps do I take next or who to contact.
There was discussion on making
more women visible so we could have women nominated as
fellows. It was brought up that there have been more women
nominated recently than ever before.
Introductions were made of the
executive committee consisting of GayLynn Kinter (Treasurer/Secretary),
Kathy Newkirk (Editor-in-Chief), and Margie Faber (past
everything!). Then everyone present introduced themselves
and gave a brief synopsis of where they were from and
what they are doing. There was a 15 minute break where
everyone got to mingle and the T-shirt sales resumed in
the back. Bob Ensor displayed his great selling skills
by selling all but a couple of the shirts we had left.
A discussion on having a scheduled
meeting other than at the tri-societies meetings was brought
up. Many individuals were attending on their own time
and at personal expense. Next year in Seattle might not
have that great of a turnout. The possibility of meeting
at the regional meetings was brought up. If they want
to host an AWSS meeting, they could contact any executive
committee members for ideas and keep them informed as
to the outcome.
GayLynn gave a report on the money
the organization had in the savings and checking accounts.
A scholarship fund was mentioned and a report will follow
on suggestions as to how a scholarship fund program will
be structured and implemented.
GayLynn also reported on the T
-shirt sales. Margie, Bob, Kathy and GayLynn sold the
T - shirts and sweatshirts in the lobby of the meeting
that afternoon. They had sold over 50 shirts and all 17
sweatshirts. There were a few remaining shirts in the
back.
A special guest was present, Larry
Wilding, President of SSSA. He was introduced and fielded
questions concerning his responsibilities in his position.
There were members of AWSS that
could not attend the AWSS meeting but who were attending
the tri-societies meeting. Members present were: Kathy
Newkirk, Marsha Shepard, Margie Faber, GayLynn Kinter,
Bob Ensor, Pamm Kasper, Debbie Hanns, Susan Samson, Bob
Grossman, Jim Culver, Betty McQuaid, Laurie Newman, Wendy
Greenberg, Maria Sadusky, Lenore Matula, and Jill Slater.
A total of 29 people were present.
The Meeting adjourned at 9:05
p.m.
Respectfully submitted: GayLynn
Kinter, Treasurer/Secretary
