MINUTES FROM THE
AWSS MEETING IN ST. LOUIS, NOVEMBER 1, 1995
Meeting called to order at 4:05
p.m. by Kathy Newkirk. Kathy gave a little informational
introduction about the organization.
GayLynn reported on the status
of the treasury. Checking has $67.52 and savings has a
balance of $3,046.28. There is an outstanding balance
due of approximately $2,800 for T-shirts, but we took
in about $2,600 at this convention in sales. About two
thirds of the shirt order was shipped to St. Louis and
the remaining ones were sent to Cheryl Simmons, our new
T-shirt chairperson.
Correspondence for the secretary
included a letter from Ohio Science department looking
for sponsors and judges for their science fair in the
spring, a symposium on phytoremediation in DC next spring,
and an Illinois science teacher looking for a contact
for her students doing research on women in science. Discussion
on how to handle requests followed. Should we indiscriminately
send out our mailing list, sell it, or only send it out
for educational purposes?
Margie reported that Maria Sadusky
will get the directory printed this month and distributed
in December.
Kathy recommended that we have
a mentoring award for people instrumental in careers and
development.
Membership Committee: Peggy Vogue
is joining as co-chair with Margie. Brochures for shirts
and membership will be updated and reprinted. Gretta Boley
is our contact with the Forest Service and will help us
get the names of soil scientists to send information to
about AWSS.
Kathy said we need an amendment
to the bylaws. Pamm Kasper motioned to amend the bylaws
to include a method of voting for officers by mail ballot.
GayLynn seconded. The motion passed.
Volunteers for newsletter editor
for the next year:
December - Margie Faber
March - Julia Nelson
June - Susan Casby-Horton
September - Gretta Boley
December - Bob Grossman
Susan Samson-Liebig offered to
help anyone with the layout of the newsletter.
Kathy thanked HH Cheng for the
presence of women at this year's ASA meetings. There were
more women moderating sessions and also speaking at them.
Next year, Dr. Keith Cassell should be contacted if anyone
would like to be on committees. Cheng said he was grateful
for people's willingness to serve on committees. Let the
society know your interests. There are still a few positions
open on some committees.
Kathy had everyone introduce
themselves. The formal meeting broke up for awhile to
allow for networking.
Scholarship: Committee members
are needed. How do we get information to universities?
We would like to give a $500/year scholarship. We could
also ask members to contribute to the scholarship fund.
Immaculada volunteered to be on the committee along with
Betty McQuaid and Loretta Johnson.
Kathy announced that the bylaws
that were voted on from the last newsletter passed.
The AWSS poster, "Women
Soil Scientists in the Field," that Margie and
GayLynn presented has been a great success and people
have asked to borrow it for meetings and workshops. It
will become a traveling display and anyone wanting to
use it should contact Margie. This will be on a first
come, first served basis.
ASA is taking over the responsibility
for maintaining our mailing list. In order to check the
accuracy of the addresses, ASA will send out a mailing
to all members shortly. Since it is dues renewal time,
we decided to insert a renewal form and questionnaire
on whether you want your name on a list for educational
outreach, business, or mentoring contacts. All address
changes and dues, mail, etc. will continue to be received
by AWSS. ASA is merely maintaining the address database
and providing us with labels for our mailings. GayLynn
and Diane Stott are both very grateful for the assistance.
Julia Nelson talked about the
World Wide Web and we discussed how AWSS could put out
information/comments on it. Some members do not have access,
but this is a topic to pursue.
GayLynn gave the status of our
not-for-profit tax exempt license. She has been meeting
with the accountant and will have everything set up by
the end of the year.
Motion to adjourn at 6:00 by
Diane Stott, seconded by Pamm Kasper.
Respectfully submitted,
GayLynn Kinter
Secretary/Treasurer
