Minutes from the Association
of Women Soil Scientists Meeting
Salt Lake City, Utah, Wyndham Hotel
October 31, 1999
Present: Sabine Goldberg, Lynn
Everett, John Kimble, Scott Davis, Laurel Mueller, Margie
Faber, Annie Engebretson, Myra Peak, Stephanie Connolly,
Inmaculada Lebron, and Susan Samson-Liebig (chairperson).
Read Secretary report.
Margie Faber reported on the
album she is keeping on the history of AWSS. Was discussed
to have the founder(s) of AWSS give a presentation at
the AWSS meeting during the ASA meetings in 2000 in
Minneapolis, MN.
A website for AWSS was discussed.
ASA can help us out. Need ideas as to what we would
like. Ideas are encouraged from members.
Question was raised if AWSS
is official with ASA. Currently, AWSS has "Chapter"
Society support.
Meeting time for AWSS at the
ASA meetings. Was decided that Sunday at 6:00 p.m. works
well for most. General feeling was to be consistent
with the time from year to year. May help attendance
levels. Annie will check into ways AWSS can better advertise
the meeting.
Interest in sending out the
AWSS newsletter via email. Need to have a box on the
membership form indicating if this is the preferred
way to receive the newsletter. Will still need to have
a hard copy for some. Thought was this would save money
being spent for printing and postage.
Myra Peak wishes to step down
as the AWSS Private Sector Rep. Need to make this appointnlent
for 2 years only. Anyone interested, contact Myra.
Year 2000--do we want to do
something special? History of AWSS or history of women
in agriculture? Thought was to have a poster and presentation
at the ASA meetings. Stephanie Connolly expressed interest
in working on this. Susan will follow up with Stephanie.
Annie will see of there will be a history symposium.
Could do something with the Minorities in Agronomy Committee
and/or Women in Agronomy.
Space for poster and tee shirts
at the ASA meeting in 2000. Annie will look into getting
us some space without charge. Idea is to not sell the
tee shirts but rather have a few for display and have
order forms available for people to complete for tee
shirt orders.
John Kimble reported that the
2006 International Union of Soils will be in Philadelphia.
By the year 2002, need to get people interested and
nominated to help out. Would be a good opportunity for
those interested. John Kimble will keep AWSS posted
via newsletter on this.
